What Flag Are You Waving
Bible Text: Matthew 5:16 New International Version (NIV) | Speaker: Rev. Dr. Carolyn Scanlan-Holmes
For years, New Zealand has debated its national flag. They wanted a flag that could overcome its colonial past and be more representative of its modern, multicultural identity and its rich indigenous heritage. So a national project in 2015 encouraged artists to create different designs for the voters to choose as the nation’s new flag. The project brought with it debate, challenge, and a national conversation. In then end it came down to 3 designs to be voted on. So what did New Zealanders choose? Join us on Sunday to hear the rest of the story!!!
This story is a reminder that a flag speaks volumes. A flag captures a nation’s history, geography, culture, politics, and religion all in one design. This weekend is a weekend of flags in Indy – from the green to checkered flag at the race to the American Legion placing flags on the graves to honor fallen soldiers. Flags truly have their own language and speak without words. What images and symbols speak to your life?
