A Letter from Pastor Carolyn to The Garden
Here we are entering into August 2021, and with God’s help, we are just now able to think about returning to life as we remember it. Still, we must know things will not be exactly as they were. As Gardeners, we know that we can’t return to our home of twenty-five years at the Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre. Despite not having a place to meet during the pandemic, we remained in contact with our members by using modern technology, the internet. And, we’re happy to say with your support, we’re still standing and remain The Garden—open and inclusive to all.
Just as we were planting The Garden’s Garden and starting a new season, The Garden Leadership Team (GLT) also found ways to help The Garden grow. During the past 18 months, we decided to meet in person on the first Sunday of the month with Drive-Through Communion and special live worship services at The District Tap. We gathered as a community with The Good Earth Band on Easter, Mother’s Day, and Father’s Day. The District Tap served as a gathering stopover as we continued working on a long-term solution. During the ensuing months, the GLT has worked diligently to find a suitable location where we could gather to share in worship on a weekly basis. We have found that due to the economic uncertainty, building a cost-effective, feasible relationship with a business has been challenging and is not possible at this time. This climate has led us to seek worship space in a church on the north side of Indianapolis.
Given these circumstances, we initiated conversation with multiple churches and have found a situation we believe will best fit The Garden. The Garden will soon move our office to Union Chapel Indy United Methodist Church, conveniently located off I-465 and Keystone Avenue, at the North-West corner of 86th Street and Haverstick Road (2720 E 86th Street, Indianapolis). In addition to office space, Union Chapel has space to share. We believe it will be a space fitting for our worship experience. Plus, it provides the opportunity to grow our community and expand our programs/events. After all, we’ll have access to an actual building made available to us for more than just a couple of hours on a Sunday morning.
Your Garden leadership is keenly aware that part of the historical appeal of The Garden has been a church outside the walls of the church. That’s why we’re hoping you’ll help us discern our next steps on this journey. So please join us on August 22 at 11 am as The Garden hosts a LIVE, in-person worship service at Union Chapel in the Great Room. We’ll have time afterward to share in fellowship and become reacquainted. You’ll have time to look around the space and consider how The Garden could find a home in this space. Then, there will be opportunity to provide some feedback and tell us your impressions.
In the meantime, join together with The Garden Leadership Team in prayer and be open to the Spirit as God continues to plant and grow this place called The Garden.
