Road To Recovery

September 23, 2018
The Adoration of the Shepherds is a 16th century painting by Sebastiano del Piombo. In the 17th century, an attempt was made to remove the painting from the its original wooden panel and place it on canvas. The move damaged the painting so badly that many thought it was lost forever. Due to the amount of damage the painting sat in storage for hundreds of years until hopefully it could be restored. It was not until the 21st century that an art restoration team had the right tools, techniques, faith, and hope to restore it. It took the team over 10 years. They removed glue, grime, and years of dirt inch by painstaking inch from the work of art. The team analyzed other works from del Piombo, along with his use of color, until the painting was restored to its original form. The painting is now on display at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge and is now one of the most revered pieces in the museum’s collection.
