Out of the Dark

Memory Lane

This Sunday, we wandered down memory lane, dug deep into the fertile soil of The Garden's history, unearthed stories, and rediscovered the roots that have nourished us along the way. For some, it may have been a stroll through familiar landscapes; for others who joined The Garden in more recent years, it may represent new terrain.

We revisited the dream that first planted the seed of The Garden in Linda McCoy's heart, and trace the journey of how that seed germinated and grew. We remembered the early days, tending those first fragile shoots in the darkness – a time of growth, nurtured by generosity, faith, vision, openness, curiosity, and love.

After The Garden's departure from its first home in a dark theatre space, it blossomed and found new life bathed in the sunlit space we know today. We've flourished in this environment, our community branching out in countless ways.

Now, as we prepare to transplant The Garden once more, we look for insight in our history and how we have grown. What lessons have we learned? What strengths have we cultivated? How can we ensure our roots remain strong as we seek new ground in which to grow?

This Sunday was "Coming out of the Dark" – a journey through time and a glimpse into the future of The Garden. Reflecting on the past, celebrating the present, and looking with hope towards a future filled with light and possibility.

A poignant blog post by Betty Brandt reflecting on a poem her father, James M. Buck, wrote to her in 1944 while stationed at Ft. McClellan, Alabama, during World War II. Betty shares her father’s love for poetry, his role as a unit scribe in Patton’s Army, and the heartfelt stories of camaraderie and survival among his fellow soldiers. Interweaving themes of love, storytelling, and faith, this post encourages readers to cherish and share their own family stories, creating connections filled with healing and sacred moments.
